The acanthus leaf is a stylized ornamental motif based on the leaves of the Mediterranean Acanthus plant. The motif first appeared in Greek architecture in the 5th century BC, most notably in the Corinthian order, where it adorned the capitals of columns. The Romans later refined and expanded its use, incorporating it into the Composite order and various decorative friezes. Over time, the acanthus leaf became a staple in Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque ornamentation.
