The acanthus leaf is a stylized ornamental motif based on the leaves of the Mediterranean Acanthus plant. The motif first appeared in Greek architecture in the 5th century BC, where it adorned the capitals of columns. Over time, the acanthus leaf became a staple in Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque ornamentation, appearing on temples, pediments, pottery, and fountains. It can still be seen today atop columns at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
